J&K Govt. Directs Schools to Screen Books for Objectionable Content

The Jammu and Kashmir government has directed all government and private schools, as well as coaching centres in Kashmir, to review books in their libraries and premises for objectionable content.

Institutions have been asked to ensure that no books contain material that violates laws, hurts religious sentiments, harms national interests or is unsuitable for students. They must also submit certificates confirming compliance with the order.

The directive comes after the BJP raised concerns over books allegedly glorifying separatist leaders and follows the 2025 ban on 25 books related to Kashmir. The move has been criticised by some political leaders, including National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who expressed concerns over academic freedom.
